Following the success of the pop up at the weekend we are pleased to say that we have been invited back by Pat and Paula at The Chequers to cook another supper on January 11th.  The same format; £20 per head. One great price. One great menu!

Now you would have thought that between a blogger, a photographer and several helpers on the night that we would have managed a gallery of pictures for you to see. But we didn't manage any photographs and the pub looked great.  The best we could do is a slice of lemon meringue pie, so here it is. It went down very well with even a request to wrap some up to eat later!

The Gazeley Chequers is near Newmarket, just a short drive from the A14. It is a 400 year old public house in Gazeley that is being refurbished by the owners Pat and Paula.  It is a real ale pub, but also serves lager, wines, spirits and soft drinks.

There are a limited number of tables for the pop up supper so booking is essential. All ingredients will be sourced locally and everything is homemade! The booking form is available on The Chequers website

The Sutton Plough

It's a long drive for us but inspector x drove, so I had three glasses of cava and a sloe gin at this evening's launch event at The Plough, near the coast and only three miles from Woodbridge. There was generous hospitality from Ruth the landlady, introducing her new chef Jerome and the autumn menu to a group of foodie friends and supporters. We ate mini-burgers, toad in the hole, welsh rarebit and fish and chip canapes, followed by mini strawberry pavlovas and treacle tarts.

Bullitt BBQ

Wow!  Suffolkfoodie has found the perfect burger - in Great Yarmouth.  YES! Great Yarmouth...  We followed our noses tthrough the wood smoke to the The Barking Smack, next door to The Hippodrome. We also followed our ears, as we loved the sound of the Roots Reggae that gave the terrace bbq shack a relaxed and laid back feel. The burgers were proper, juicy patties, cooked to your liking and there were real ales too, including Blonde Ash. Here is the Carnivore Burger.  Well done to Mark, not only an excellent burger, but happy and helpful service too!

Noodle No No

Whether you approve or not the Wetherspoons Brand is making its' mark here in Suffolk. The controversial new one due to open in the beautiful Corn Exchange in Bury and the Willow Tree,  just opened in Stowmarket, specialise in budget food and drinks at remarkably low prices. I went to see for myself how Stow was getting on. It was packed on a Friday lunchtime - families with babies in pushchairs, office workers and lone drinkers. My daughter went to the bar and ordered two cokes. A male customer stopped her and asked if if she was on her lunch break, pulled a hip flask of rum from his pocket and offered her a shot in her coke!

I tried the Sweet Chilli Noodles.  Described on the menu as egg noodles tossed in a sweet chilli sauce with red peppers, spring onion, choy sum, bamboo shoots and carrots.  £3.30 for 356 calories.  What arrived was something called Yuk Yuk Yuk   so I saved those calories for another day.

Suffolk Shipcord Cheese Custard - served with soda bread. Serves 4.

The Savoury Custard

1 pint whipping cream.
5 free range eggs
200g Suffolk Shipcord cheese (or similar strong cheese)
200g spinach
Pinch salt & cayenne pepper

Boil the cream and let it cool down to room temperature.  Whisk the eggs, then mix with the rest of ingredients.  Pour into a buttered oven proof dish at least 2 inches deep. Place in a pre-heated oven at 150°C for 20 to 30 mins. When cooked it should feel slightly firm to the touch. Serve with warm oatmeal soda bread and a mixed green salad.

Soda Bread

150g wholemeal flour, plus extra for dusting

150g plain flour

25g porridge oats

2tsp soft brown sugar

284ml carton buttermilk

1 tsp salt

1 tsp bicarbonate of soda

Sift flour, salt, and bicarbonate of soda into a large bowl.  Add sugar and oats, then stir in the buttermilk using a wooden spoon.  Bring together the dough with your hands into a round and place on a baking sheet dusted with flour.  Cut a cross on top then bake for 30 mins at 200°C. Cool on a wire rack then slice and serve with butter.
